Training for the SKS

The Coastal Skipper Certificate (SKS) is the recommended licence for operating yachts in coastal waters. The training provides advanced knowledge in navigation, maritime law, weather, and practical seamanship. The SKS builds on the SBF See and significantly expands nautical competence.

Exam Content

The course includes all topics required for the theoretical and practical examination:

  • Navigation: chartwork, tidal triangle, course calculation, positions
  • Maritime law: COLREGs, national regulations, collision avoidance
  • Weather: fronts, pressure systems, local effects
  • Seamanship: safety, manoeuvres, crew management
  • Practical training: sailing and engine manoeuvres, anchoring, harbour manoeuvres
  • Vessel technology: essential knowledge for safe operation

Course Structure

The training is clearly organised and prepares you specifically for the exam:

Requirements

  • Valid SBF See
  • Proof of 300 nautical miles (for the practical exam)
  • Minimum age: 16 years
