Tides & Currents

Foundations of tides, current calculation, and navigation in tidal waters — taught in a technically sound, clearly structured, and practical manner.

Nautical Specialist Module: Tides & Currents

Navigation in tidal waters requires a precise understanding of tides, currents, and their influence on course, speed, and safety. This module covers the fundamentals of tidal science, the calculation of water levels and currents, and their practical application in navigation. It is designed for skippers who want to navigate safely in areas such as the North Sea, English Channel, or Wadden Sea.

Module Content

The module covers all essential foundations and procedures of tidal navigation:

  • Origin of tides: moon, sun, tidal forces
  • High water, low water, tidal range
  • Tidal curves and reference ports
  • Calculation of water levels
  • Current tables and current charts
  • Tidal triangle: course, speed, set & drift
  • Navigation in tidal waters: planning and execution
  • Special considerations: Wadden Sea, estuaries, narrow channels
  • Sources of error and safety considerations

Course Structure

The module is clearly structured and adapted to the participant’s level of knowledge:

  • Theoretical introduction to tidal science and current calculation
  • Practical exercises with tidal curves and current tables
  • Calculation of real navigation tasks
  • Optional: preparation for SKS, SSS, or SHS
  • Individual guidance in a calm learning environment

Requirements

  • No prior knowledge required
  • Basic navigation skills helpful but not necessary
