Weather & Marine Meteorology

Foundations of weather analysis, fronts, pressure systems, and marine weather — taught in a technically sound, clearly structured, and practical manner.

Nautical Specialist Module: Weather & Marine Meteorology

Meteorology is a central component of safe navigation. This module covers the fundamentals of weather formation, the analysis of weather charts and frontal systems, and the practical application for passage planning. It is designed for skippers who want to assess weather situations reliably and make informed decisions — from coastal cruising to offshore sailing.

Module Content

The module covers all essential foundations and procedures of marine meteorology:

  • Fundamentals of weather formation
  • Pressure systems: highs, lows, gradients, isobars
  • Fronts: warm fronts, cold fronts, occlusions
  • Cloud patterns and weather development
  • Wind formation and local effects
  • Analysis of weather charts and forecasts
  • Marine weather reports and warnings
  • Weather routing: principles and application
  • Special considerations: coastal weather, thermal winds, katabatic winds

Course Structure

The module is clearly structured and adapted to the participant’s level of knowledge:

  • Theoretical introduction to weather formation and analysis
  • Interpretation of real weather charts and forecasts
  • Practical exercises for passage planning
  • Optional: preparation for SKS, SSS, or SHS
  • Individual guidance in a calm learning environment

Requirements

  • No prior knowledge required
  • Basic navigation skills helpful but not necessary
