Chartwork is the foundation of safe navigation. This module covers all essential methods of terrestrial navigation — from course calculation to position fixing. It is designed for beginners and advanced navigators who want to deepen or professionalise their navigation skills.

Module Content

The module covers all important procedures of classical chartwork:

  • Structure and reading of nautical charts
  • Types of courses: true, variation, magnetic, compass
  • Course conversion with variation and deviation
  • Tidal triangle: set, drift, speed over ground
  • Leeway and wind correction
  • Bearings: cross bearings, double bearings, leading lines
  • Position lines and position fixing
  • Practical navigation: planning and execution
  • Sources of error and safety considerations

Course Structure

The module is clearly structured and adapted to the participant’s level of knowledge:

  • Theoretical introduction to all navigation methods
  • Practical exercises with nautical charts and navigation instruments
