Radar & Collision Avoidance

Foundations of radar operation, target tracking, and collision avoidance — taught in a technically sound, practical, and structured manner.

Nautical Specialist Module: Radar & Collision Avoidance

Radar is one of the most important navigation and safety systems on board. This module covers the fundamentals of radar operation, interpretation of radar images and plotting, as well as collision‑avoidance procedures according to the COLREGs. It is designed for skippers who want to expand their navigation competence or prepare specifically for SSS‑level radar tasks.

Module Content

The module covers all essential foundations and procedures of radar navigation:

  • Function and limitations of radar
  • Operation: ranges, gain, sea clutter, rain clutter
  • Interpretation of the radar image
  • Target tracking: manual plotting and CPA/TCPA determination
  • True Motion vs. Relative Motion
  • Collision avoidance according to COLREGs (especially Rule 19)
  • Radar in practice: navigation in restricted visibility
  • Sources of error and safety considerations

Course Structure

The module is clearly structured and adapted to the participant’s level of knowledge:

  • Theoretical introduction to radar physics and operation
  • Analysis of real radar plots
  • Practical plotting exercises (manual or simulated)
  • Optional: preparation for SSS radar tasks
  • Individual guidance in a calm learning environment

Requirements

  • No prior knowledge required
  • Basic navigation skills helpful but not necessary
